always something.

There was always something in his head —
— a shadow he couldn’t shake ; a demon that couldn’t disappear —
It showed in the curl of his scowl and the curses in his words - the downward pull of his brows and the smoke-fire tint in his eyes —
It bared ugliest when we duelled, fought, hacked at each other -
Naked and raw - like the blades that rang and shrieked across whatever muddy, blood-caked field we had decided to make our arena in a spur of taunts, impulse and ego -
I never shied away from it — I always wondered why he did (tried) —
There is a beast in all of us
Sometimes it wins —
What matters is
How we fight back and make amends after
And try and tighten the cage around it — while setting our soul free —
One day
Maybe
I hope —
He will accept the hand that’s always been extended towards him
(Even if it holds lightning’s fury and a blade pointed at the throats of his kind)

“You just don’t get it, do you?” Sol growls out, gold eyes flashing angrily, teeth gritted and fist clenched into Ky’s uniform collar - (as if that was all it took to make Ky break a sweat) -
“I’m no longer a ‘man’ -“ Ky hears the word for what it really is (human) ringing out hollow anyway -
- resists the very real urge to shock Sol with the lightning magic steadily growing with his agitation (he knows and is trying his darnedest to quell it - tiny hairs on the back of his neck and arms already rising with static) -
- instead, just sighs a little bit - before slowly (for both his own and Sol’s benefit) raising a gloved hand to run his thumb over the headband he’s never seen the other man take off -
“At least you’re trying to still be one.”
