unravel .4

supernatural (not the show) ! modern!AU
noctis, lightning (can they even be considered a pairing here? LOL).
based on my entry for the "Dark Fic" genre (#7) in my 10 One-Sentence lol not really Fics (Meme).

chapters : 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | ?

warnings: some of the blood & gore & swearing that seem to be pretty standard for this series now.

a/n: changed the name of the fic series to unravel - as per the song from tokyo ghoul (the OP by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure) cos it's JUST. SO. APT.

gotta admit, hyde by vixx (THAT'S RIGHT [livejournal.com profile] celticheavens) was quite a good jam for this chapter too :D

omg I wrote something /weeps

TUMBLR ver. | DEVIANTART ver.

- - -  k n i g h t  i n  s h i n i n g  a r m o u r - - -

Under the ethereal lethal blessings from the crescent moon high above - unaffected, unwavering, uncaring -
They fought their weapons clashing harshly
Shattering the once dense silence of the forest

It was utter insanity

Never had Lightning been assaulted by so many deadly weapons at once an amorphous whirlwind of deadly crystal
Yes, there had been times before desperate times when she was
Outnumbered and
Completely surrounded
And things had seemed hopeless
But she had been fighting against beasts then - lost to their thirst for mindless slaughter -

This though. This werewolf -

As a trained fighter and seasoned warrior
Lightning knew the difference
When there was nothing but instinct and bloodlust
Behind a monster's assailments and slashes

But this -

This one is different
Oh so different

Each step he took was calculated, each strike efficient and practiced
He switched between his endless crystal arsenal flawlessly - a forceful thrust from a heavily embellished lance to stagger the enemy - the lance would then disappear mid-recoil into a thin, agile blade for multiple strategic slashes - he even had a giant of a broadsword, almost as long as the werewolf was tall, for parrying -

Parrying - as if he were used to friendly or competitive duels with other people -
As a sport - what did that mean for his past? -

The most unsettling thing was
The way he moved - like he was dancing more than fighting -

The first seeds of doubt planted themselves deep within her consciousness
A seemingly unimportant thought, a fleeting gasp of uncomprehensibility -

Who was he
Why was he different
Was he once -

No, no, he couldn't be -
And yet -

All he needed was that moment of hesitation
The split second waver in Lightning's expression (barely noticeable, but Noctis is a hunter and these moments are what separated him from being prey - ) and a miniscule lowering of her Blazefire Sabre -

All Lightning manages to catch is the slightest upturn of the werewolf's lips
And a flash of crimson eyes - a swirl of glimmering particles -

And he is gone.

- And there is searing pain in her lower back as he somehow manages to land a kick on her from behind -
What absolute fuckery is this -
Lightning cries out as her knee buckles - she will not fall - gritting her teeth tight in both pain and frustration, one gloved hand crunching the dead leaves on the forest floor as she seeks some sort of balance -

The shine and cool of metal from his falchion makes her freeze - it was right next to her neck -
And in that brief instant Lightning thinks of Serah and how she's meeting her soon -

"Well. I guess I won that round." She can almost hear the grin in his voice - and it enrages her beyond any reason that she is being shown pity - by a monster, by this werewolf of all things -

"Fuck you, asshole! Do it! Kill me. What difference does it make to you - "

She doesn't know which of the things that happened next stunned her more.

That Cidney and Fang emerge from behind a large tree a few feet away - she sees, from the corner of her eye, the other Huntress hurling an icicle at the werewolf as she steps clear, Fang's veridian eyes blazing with anger and protectiveness, bearing a fierce snarl of her own -

Or that the werewolf barely flinches at their sudden appearance and counters with his own ball of flame magic. The vermillion projectile meets the cold spell halfway with a violent hiss, the two forces cancelling each other and dissipating into nothing.

First the crystal weapons, now magic?! Who was this guy...

Noctis tilts his head slightly to regard the newly arrived Hunters, all the while keeping Lightning within his peripheral vision. His eyes still gleam crimson from invoking his magic and in the navy darkness of the forest, he can sense the growing unease of the two Huntresses as they properly take in exactly what they were facing.

The odds - numerically - weren't exactly in his favour, but he would never risk showing that. Always look like you have the upper hand.

He summons four more weapons - sword rapier spear dagger - and directs them at Lightning, while he narrows his eyes at the two Huntresses - do something stupid and she dies - or so he seemed to say -

Before in a burst of crystalline dust -

He is gone. Again.

"What the fuck"

A quick healing spell from Cidney gives Lightning back her rage and indignance and how dare they interrupt her fight
Cidney casts her eyes to the side, a pout in her puffed cheeks, a silent I told you so -
Fang is the one with equal (if not more) gall - meeting Lightning's fury straight on with her own expression of feigned indifference

"Why are you here? What did you think you were doing?"

"Saving your ass from what I could gather, or were you about to perform some brilliant counterattack with his sword at your goddamn neck?"

For all of Fang's snark and tempered irritance, Lightning knew the other Huntress was right (not that she would admit it outloud)
And because her pride wouldn't allow her to do anything else, Lightning shoots them one last baleful glare
Before she stalks away, bitterness and anger in her every step
